Corn and Bt toxins

Corn and bt toxinsIf you love fresh corn, picked today, then you want to know about Corn and Bt toxins.  I love fresh corn, and the closer it is picked to the time I am going to eat it the better. But here is the problem. I need to raise my own corn or purchase from a certified organic farmer.  I do not want anything to do with Monsanto’s genetically engineered corn with its Bt-toxin.

Bt corn is a genetically modified organism (GMO) that has been bioengineered to resist the corn root-worm, a crop pest. This corn takes advantage of a toxin produced by the Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium. This toxin, known as Bt, ruptures the intestines of the corn root-worm and related organisms when it is ingested. The holes in the intestines cause the root-worm todie within two or three days. Read that again, Bt-toxin is a pesticide; it breaks open the stomach of certain insects and kills them. I’m not big on ingesting pesticides.  Keep in mind that this pesticide is part of the corns DNA, so when you eat GMO corn you are eating a pesticide that is known to break open the stomach of insects that have eaten it.

Not ready to give up your GMO corn yet, would it surprise you to know that this seed is 6848158_swhat is know as Roundup Ready corn. By introducing a gene into the plant cells, scientists have been able to produce plants that can survive the herbicide glyphosate, (aka roundup weed killer)enabling farmers to apply glyphosate as a weed-killer on their crop. What worries me here is that roundup is applied on the crop, which means that there is the possibility that the person eating the corn could be ingesting the herbicide with the corn.

There is just to much going on with GMO products for me to want to serve them to anyone I know. If you are interested in finding out more on this subject, please join us at to 2013 Food Revolution Summit. It is FREE between April 27 and May 5th 2013. To register for the free interviews go tohttp://www.foodrevolution.org/summit?orid=66897&opid=18

The above link is my affiliate link but you do not need to purchase anything to receive access to all these great interviews. Just go and listen to what is happening to our food supply and what we need to do to save it. Our foods might just be slowly killing us and the companies that are producing it have the governments blessings. We need to learn as much as possible.

I believe all people have the fundamental right to unpolluted air, water, soil, and food and that no seed should be patented .

I agree with your thoughts. I won’t be available during part of this time span and won’t be signing up but I did tweet and post on my Facebook fan page.

I deplore the rise and rise of GM food. How can anyone think its OK to tinker with nature, particularly on foodstuffs?! And I agree, there is simply nothing like eating your own corn out of your garden!

And the sad thing is, when you live near a farm that grows GM plants, it is easy for
those to transfer their poisons to your plants. (Cross-pollination) But we’re working
hard to get laws passed to slow down Monsanto and other companies.

This gives me a belly-ache. I grow my own heirloom corn, but the problem is–with GMO corn all around me for miles and miles, there’s no way I can keep it from (potentially) cross-pollinating with my good corn.

As chefs, We are working hard to get labeling of GM products and educate the public at
the same time. Once the public is aware of the dangers, and there are labels to help
them avoid these foods, we might slow down Monsanto, DuPont and the others. It’s a long
slow road, but with the help of Ocean Robins his father and others, we are getting the word
out there. I am lucky in one way, Mexico is one of the 50 countries that has adopted
regulations requiring labeling of GM products (and some in the U.S. call it a backward
third world country) Wisconsin is one of the three worst states producing “pharma-crops”
which are plants the have been genetically engineered to produce pharmaceutical or
      industrial chemicals. Scary isn’t it?
